NIZHNIY NOVGOROD KREMLIN
Nizhniy Novgorod Kremlin located on a hill nearby the place where the Oka river flows into the Volga. Before the Tatar yoke it was a wooden fortress. In 1500 one started to build stone towers and walls instead of the wooden dilapidated Kremlin. From the Volga river this architectural ensemble looks magnificently - notched walls (15 m in height), 13 pointed four-storied towers. The highest of the towers is Tchasovaya (from Russian word "tchasi" - "a clock" - the tower had a clock). It served as a watchtower.
