Silent coniferous forest, meadows full of flowers, the sun playing in clouds and silvering the river surface - these photos please any virtual traveler. However there is a special picture in the album - a photo of bell tower of the Nicolas cathedral lonely raising just at the middle of Volga. The bell tower is a monument of past might... |
| NIZHNIY NOVGOROD KREMLIN |
| Nizhniy Novgorod Kremlin located on a hill nearby the place where the Oka river flows into the Volga. Before the Tatar yoke it was a wooden fortress. In 1500 one started to build stone towers and walls instead of the wooden dilapidated Kremlin. From the Volga river this architectural ensemble looks magnificently - notched walls (15 m in height), 13 pointed four-storied towers. The highest of the towers is Tchasovaya (from Russian word "tchasi" - "a clock" - the tower had a clock). It served as a watchtower. |
