The Southern ocean appears in geographical maps just recently.
In spring 2000 the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO)
accept a decision to proclaim the water space that is extended
from the coast of Antarctica north to 60°south latitude as a separate
ocean - the Southern. This decision reflects the recent findings in
oceanography.

This is a really great collection of very interesting pictures - Sunbeams Under the Ice, Grounded Icebergs, Seafloor Zones, portraits of Weddel seals, medusas and many others. Mostly the photos are from Ross Sea.
